SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and helping small businesses start, grow, and succeed nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), and has been mentoring small business owners for more than forty years.

SCORE is a valuable network of 10,000 volunteers who offer small business entrepreneurs confidential business counseling services at no charge. SCORE volunteers have the knowledge and experience to help any small business owner get the help they need. Our dedicated volunteers represent over 3,000 years of experience across 62 industries.

SCORE also provides local workshops and events throughout the country to connect small business owners with the people and information they need to start, grow, and maintain their businesses, as well as online workshops available 24/7. SCORE provides resources, templates and tools to assist entrepreneurs in developing tools and plans they need to navigate their way to small business success.

Founded in 1964, SCORE is headquartered in Herndon, VA and has 364 chapters throughout the United States and its territories, with over 10,000 volunteers nationwide.

Washington,  D.C.- Walter H. Channing of  Detroit, Michigan died at age 94. Channing was the first chapter chair of the SCORE Detroit Chapter and a leader in the formation of the national SCORE Association. In 1982, Channing became SCORE's president emeritus, with a standing position on the board of directors.

During Channing's more than 30 years of service to SCORE he served in a number of roles including; president emeritus, association founder, first national chairman, chapter chair, district manager, and legislative affairs volunteer. Channing counseled more than 800 entrepreneurs and conducted 170 workshops during his tenure with SCORE.

Channing retired in 1954 as the merchandise manager of Crowley's department store in Detroit, where he worked for more than 30 years. From 1955 - 1963, he served as a consultant on marketing and retail distribution for the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OECD) in Paris, France. Channing was named SCORE Volunteer of the Year for the Midwest Area in 1966. In 1970, he was honored with the Presidential SCORE Citation In 1995, Channing was honored with The Walter H. Channing Award of Excellence by the SCORE Association. The board of directors established this award in Channing's honor and conveys the award to a member or organization who has consistently provided outstanding service to the SCORE Association.

Channing was actively involved in civic and business organizations. He served as the Chairman and board member, division of National Retail Merchants Association; Vice President Michigan Retail Merchants Association; Member Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce; Member International Association of Department Stores, Paris, France; International Association of Town Planning & Distribution, Brussels, Belgium; Honorary President of the Chamber of Commerce, Greece; Member of Reserve Officers Association; and as a Member American Legion Post # 1, Paris, France. Channing served as a staff officer in the U.S. Army, during World War II.

Chapter 18 was chartered on April 29, 1965.
